Rain confession is one of the most reliable visual beats in Korean romantic drama. The setup is consistent enough that international viewers anticipate it: rain begins, neither lead has an umbrella, the conversation that has been delayed for several episodes happens.

How directors use it:

• Rain functions as the show's permission slip. The characters could not say what they say in fluorescent office light.
• Production almost always uses controlled rain rigs, not weather. The lighting is unmistakable.
• Modern K-drama has occasionally subverted the trope with deliberately not using rain at the moment the audience expects it - which itself depends on the trope being known.
