Tsundere lead 츤데레 (Cheundere)
Tsundere lead (츤데레, Cheundere) - A romantic lead - usually but not exclusively male - who presents as cold, dismissive, or actively hostile early in the relationship and reveals tenderness only to a specific other character, gradually. The term is loaned from Japanese "tsundere" and used widely in Korean fan and trade press.
Tsundere (츤데레, transliterated from Japanese) is fully naturalized in Korean drama vocabulary. It describes a lead whose hostility is performance, whose softness is real, and whose arc is the slow public revelation of the latter.
How it shows up:
- The character's coldness is calibrated to one other person, often a coworker, classmate, or contractual fiancée. To everyone else they are merely formal or distant.
- The "fall" is slow. K-dramas tend to spend several episodes in the gap between "this character would never" and "this character now would, but won't admit it."
- The trope often pairs with chaebol heir - wealth + tsundere produces a particular flavor of romantic friction the genre returns to often.
