Sageuk 사극 (Sageuk)

Sageuk (사극, Sageuk) - Korean historical period drama, most often set in the Joseon dynasty (1392–1897). The genre is wide enough to contain palace politics, fictionalized monarchs, fictional commoners, fantasy mash-ups, and fully invented histories side-by-side.

Sageuk (사극) is the umbrella term Korean television and film use for any historical drama. The genre is much broader than "set in Joseon." Modern sageuk include fully fictional courts, fantasy bloodlines, time-slip frames where the past explains the present, and recent additions like the Goguryeo-set Queen Woo and the colonial-era Gyeongseong Creature.

Worth knowing:

  • Costume detail and palace ritual are usually researched closely; production designers often consult historians. That doesn't mean the plot is historical - it means the texture is.
  • The dialogue register is distinct: court speech uses honorifics, archaic verb endings, and Sino-Korean vocabulary that contemporary K-dramas would never use. English dubs of sageuk are rare; subtitle quality matters more than usual.
  • Sub-genres: jeongtong sageuk (orthodox historical), fusion sageuk (mixes modern beats with period costume), fantasy sageuk (e.g. Alchemy of Souls). All three cohabit on the same streaming pages.
