Memory loss (기억상실) recurs in Korean drama with enough frequency that international viewers sometimes treat it as the genre's signature device. It is not a recent invention - Korean melodramas have used amnesia plots for decades - and it has settled into a recognizable set of shapes.

How it usually works:

• A traumatic event severs the protagonist's recall. Recovery is partial and gradual, often through sensory triggers (a song, a smell, a place).
• The romantic counterpart usually remembers; the asymmetry is the engine.
• The reveal is staged for maximum emotional payoff, frequently in the back third of the run.

The trope is sometimes criticized internationally as a writing crutch. Defenders note that the device, when used well, lets a show examine identity, agency, and how love survives the absence of shared history.
